Taran Z is a studio photographer who has specialized in still life, food, and photo illustration for twenty five years. Her studio in Washington, D.C. has fully equipped kitchen facilities and large format digital and proofing capabilities. Taran studied illustration, design, and photography at the Academy of Art in San Francisco.
Taran works on a wide range of projects, from corporate brochures,ads, catalogs, and annual reports to cookbooks, calendars, and editorial features. Some of her clients include Marriott Corporation, Maggie Moo's, Ogilvy Worldwide, Balducci's, Relish, Betsy Fisher, The Magazine Group, Johnson & Johnson, Design Army, and Georgetown University. She has done cookbooks and calendars for Marriott, Virginia Seafood, American Diabetes, Australian Lamb, Sunnyside Farms.
Whether the subject matter is jewelry, food, or more intangible subjects, Taran's client's rely on her multi-faceted approach and strong sense of design. Her unique photographic style is characterized by evocative lighting, unusual props, and sophisticated use of contemporary color palettes.
In addition to photography, Taran conducts seminars about lighting techniques and marketing strategies at various schools, including the Corcoran School of Art, American University, and Northern Virginia Community College. She also supervises student photography interns from various colleges.
Over the years, Taran has won numerous awards from the New York Art Director's Club, the Washington Art Director's Club, AIGA, PDN/Nikon Self Promotion Competition, ADDY's and other design/photo competitions. She has been a longstanding member of ASMP, APA, AIGA, WARL, and WDCADC.
Taran has been featured in interviews appearing in Photo District News, Fuji's Profiles, Rangefinder, and Communication Arts magazines. She also conducted a series of still life seminars held for professionals in four major cities in Southeast Asia for Fuji Film.
